Steel vs. Wood – Invest in your garage door

April 5, 2021

Steel garage doors continue to be more popular than any other type of garage door and for good reason. Steel doors are affordable and need virtually no maintenance to keep them looking great. These days they also are available in a wide variety of colors and textures.

But is a steel door the right choice for you? Wood garage doors also are extremely popular and offer many benefits to the homeowner. Taking the time to look over the various features and options for today’s garage doors can help you make the right decision if you are considering replacing your garage door.

Steel doors – consider quality

Not all steel garage doors are the same, so it’s important to weigh the savings you may realize on a less expensive door against the features that are important to you.

  • An insulated door is worth the extra cost if your garage is attached. Steel is a poor insulator, so your savings on the door could easily go to paying higher utility bills to keep your home warm or cool. For a detached garage used strictly for cars, tools and other storage, an uninsulated door may make sense.
  • Choose a thicker gauge steel for a garage door that will be visible. Why? Because the thinner panels of a 27- or 28-gauge steel door will be more easily damaged by bumps than the thicker panels of a 25- or 26-gauge steel door. If you have a basketball hoop in front of your garage you will want a door that can withstand the inevitable bumps from a pickup game.
  • Steel doors will require little maintenance, but they may show some rust over time. The good news is rust can be sanded and steel doors can be painted. If you prefer no maintenance, invest in a galvanized steel door that will never rust.
  • If top of the line insulation and security is a priority, you may invest in a 24-gauge steel door, although most homeowners will be serviced well by a mid-level steel door.

Wood doors – traditional style

Homeowners frequently choose wood doors for their warm, traditional look and their affordability. While they do need regular maintenance, consider some of the benefits they provide.

  • Wood is a great natural insulator whether your garage is attached or detached.
  • A wood door can enhance the look of any home, especially older homes, with a wide variety of styles both with and without windows.
  • Cedar and other solid wood choices make today’s wood doors extremely durable, even in inclement weather.
  • Since wood doors are served best by a fresh coat of paint every few years, homeowners can enjoy the opportunity to change the look of their home.

Garage doors also are available in many other materials, including aluminum and wood composites. At Above & Beyond Door Systems, our experts are always on hand to review the features of all our garage doors and garage door opening systems so you make the best choice for your home. Call today.
