The first thing you should always do is take a look at the springs above your garage door. If you have a broken spring, it needs to be replaced immediately. All moving parts on garage doors are metal, except the newer doors that have nylon rollers and the higher end belt drive openers. The best advice I can give anyone is to lubricate their door on a semi-annual, or at the least annual basis. Go to Home Depot and buy a can of PB Blaster Garage Door Lubricant, do NOT use WD-40! Spray all moving parts liberally, but not excessively, hinges, rollers, springs, track, chains on openers, the gear on top of opener, etc. Do not spray belt drive openers. You will be amazed at how much smoother and quieter your door will become, in return you will add years to the life of your garage door and opener.
90% of the jobs we pull up on, the garage door has never been lubricated. That door goes up and down several times every day, lubricate it! If you still are having issues, please give us a call and we will be happy to help you over the phone. I have saved many people a service call by talking them through other things to look for. I hope that I have been helpful.
